What is Dutasteride?

Dutasteride is a second-generation 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor that blocks both Type I and Type II isoenzymes, resulting in greater than 90% reduction in serum DHT compared to finasteride's 70%. Originally approved as Avodart in 2002 for benign prostatic hyperplasia, dutasteride has emerged as the most potent oral DHT suppressor available for androgenetic alopecia in men who fail to respond to finasteride monotherapy.

Contraindications and Safety

Dutasteride is contraindicated in women of childbearing potential, pregnant women, pediatric patients, and patients with severe hepatic impairment. Men with known hypersensitivity to dutasteride or other 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors should not use this medication. Sexual side effects (decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, ejaculate disorders) occur in 3-5% of users. Baseline PSA is required in men over 40 since dutasteride reduces PSA by approximately 50%. Pregnant women must not handle crushed or broken dutasteride capsules due to transdermal absorption risk.
